How to Support Your Local SAPR Program
Every April, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) brings communities together to address the issue of sexual violence and promote prevention efforts. Observed by both civilian and military communities, SAAPM highlights the importance of raising awareness, supporting survivors, and fostering a culture of accountability and respect.
For 2025, the Department of Defense (DoD) has selected the theme STEP FORWARD. Prevent. Report. Advocate. It calls on individuals to take actionable steps toward creating safer communities by addressing harmful behaviors, supporting survivors, and actively participating in prevention efforts. Together, we can build a stronger environment for everyone.
Supporting your local Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program is vital to fostering a community where safety and respect are prioritized. Here are practical ways you can get involved.
Participate in SAAPM Events
-
Attend workshops, educational sessions, awareness campaigns, or other events hosted by your local SAPR programs.
-
Volunteer your time to assist with events.
These events are designed to educate participants on prevention strategies, encourage open dialogue, and demonstrate solidarity with survivors.
Advocate for Prevention
-
Promote conversations about the importance of consent, respect, and intervention within your workplace, home, and community.
-
Challenge harmful behaviors and attitudes when you encounter them.
-
Lead by example in fostering a culture that prioritizes respect and accountability.
By stepping forward as an advocate, you contribute to building a community where sexual violence is not tolerated.
Educate Yourself and Others
-
Learn about the dynamics of sexual violence, the resources available, and the role everyone plays in prevention.
-
Share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues to amplify awareness and understanding.
-
Participate in training programs and educational courses offered by SAPR programs or community organizations.
Knowledge not only empowers you to act but also inspires others to do the same.
Volunteer, advocate, educate others – spread the word.
